Writers like Us: Black Writing in the Age of Obama

Ringshout and A Public Space present a panel on what the historic election of President Barack Obama means for black writing and for the publishing of books by African Americans.

Host Martha Southgate, pictured above, author of several novels, most recently Third Girl from the Left (Houghton Mifflin), will be joined by essayist and critic Stanley Crouch, author of Considering Genius and Artificial White Man (Basic Civitas Books); James Hannaham, critic and author of the upcoming novel God Says No (McSweeney’s), historian and essayist Emily Bernard, editor of Remember Me to Harlem: The Letters of Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten (Vintage).

    This sounds like a wonderful event. Despite my disagreement on some, but not all, culture issues, he remains a provocative (even amusing) figure. I wish I could come. You all need to do stuff in D.C.–after the meltdown, it’s the only city that matters anymore, (and the mayor of DC, the govs of Md. and Va. aren’t clowns or bizarre as are Mr. patterson and Mr. Bloomberg).

    Anyway please let me know how the event goes and include me in any follow up.
