Soiree to Celebrate Amy DuBois Barnett’s New Book

Angela Burt-Murray, Gayle King and Kevin Liles hosted a fabulous book party for journalist Amy DuBois Barnett last night. They reserved the penthouse of the SoHo Grand, and the New York literary world – folk in print and broadcast media, authors, and editors – sipped cocktails as they gazed out over a humid Manhattan sky. Everyone gathered to celebrate the publication of Amy’s first book, Get Yours.

I met my friend, journalist and author of the book What Your Mama Never Told You, Tara Roberts. Before Tara and I even connected, though, I ran into editors Stacey Barney and Kelli Martin. Editor Janet Hill and Essence’s own Patrick Henry Bass were just upstairs as we arrived in the penthouse suite.

It was wonderful to see playwright and actor Sarah Jones, who cut her locks (!) and looked amazing. Joyous as always.

I was able to meet Marcia Cole, whom I only knew via email and telephone. Finally, a face to go with the name and voice. Marcia just launched Amber, an urban beauty site, online.

Claire Villarosa arrived, and Theo Perry, publicist and genuine good guy, was there.

I feel like I ran into so many great folk, like real estate queen Dawanna Williams and Black Diamonds founder Pam Pickens… too many to list in a blog. It was, truly, a festive night. Very special.

I read a bit of Get Yours last night before going to bed and really enjoyed the first chapter. Amy was Editor-in-Chief at Honey before becoming the first African American to run a major mainstream magazine when she ascended to the top of the masthead at Teen People. Now she’s a woman on the move at Harper’s Bazaar and certainly gearing up for a whirlwind tour. I think many units of her book will move. Get your Get Yours while you still can.

    Talk to you soon,
