Karen Grigsby Bates interviews Terry McMillan, Susan McHenry of Black Issues Book Review (“the industry’s Bible for Black publishing news”), Calvin Reid of Publisher’s Weekly, and Troy Johnson of AALBC.com about the proliferation of street fiction. Listen to this important segment on NPR’s All Things Considered:

Publishing Company Called Out over ‘Ghetto Lit’

Listen to this story… by Karen Grigsby Bates

All Things Considered, October 12, 2007 · Author Terry McMillan sent a letter to Simon & Schuster’s head editors, blasting them and the publishing world for publishing and promoting so-called “ghetto lit,” which is often referred to as urban literature and urban fiction.

The genre often shows the most outrageously pathological part of black life.

Many esteemed black authors have been equally dismayed, but the McMillan broadside is now loosening lips.

I?ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.

Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:

    Amazon Secret Web Pages

This is where you?re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you?re a savvy shopper.

Next, there?s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.

You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit – I?ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.
