After prayerful consideration, it is my privilege to announce my candidacy for the 2010 Congress of the 10th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York. I have given this decision a great deal of thought, and I’ve concluded that my love and dedication for this country is far too important to me than to remain on the sidelines of democracy. A change is necessary in Brooklyn and we need someone who understands that this is OUR time - OUR moment.
I am running because I know deep in my heart that with your help, I can win. I am running because the incumbent has minimal presence in the legislature and in the district; no vision or platform for the people he represents. We did not go through the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s to be saddled with faulty leadership. President Barack Obama's win was the start of a sea of change in American leadership. I am here to do my part, to be counted and to share my vision and work with the American people.
I am running for Congress because I believe deeply in justice and empowerment for all people; and because there is no greater joy to me than helping others. This is my life's work, which can be furthered as a member of Congress. As a child born to a single mother, we struggled and faced extreme poverty. Even today, as a community leader, I continue to struggle through this recession like so many of us across Brooklyn and across the country; and like so many of us, I too long for change but I cannot do this without YOU. Your support is necessary - together we can make a real difference.
